Check that, all movies that have INTERNATIONAL release go to cannes... so it's no shock Clones will be there. I think all the Star Wars movies have played Cannes

It is not part of the selection. It was just shown there because it was also shown everywhere else in France. Lucas probably thought that going to Cannes to introduce AOTC would be a good publicity. BTW, what makes you think that the French liked Jerry Lewis ?! Woody Allen is far more appreciated in France than in the USA, but not Jerry Lewis... !

'The French critics-and public-came to revere Lewis during this period, and hailed The Nutty Professor (1963), a comic Jekyll and Hyde story, as his masterpiece'

I thought it was 'a well known fact'(TM) that the french (in general) loved Jerry Lewis & his style of comedy. Perhaps it's a generational thing that has worn off in the interviening years. But, obviously, I bow to your knowledge
