you're into that sort of thing.

I saw Ep2 last night at midnight, and then I saw it again this afternoon. First of all, I'd like to say that I was mezmerized by this film. Call me a fanboy, but I thought that this film was one of the most impressive I have ever seen. I can't help but draw similarities from this film to ESB. Stucturally, this series is very similar to the first. The first film in each trilogy can pretty much stand on it's own. If you have never seen any Star Wars film before, you can watch either one and not miss anything if you never see another. Therefore, if the first film was not successful, there wouldn't be any loose plot threads needing to be tied up. For example, if _The Phantom Menace_ was the only Star Wars film ever made, then Star Wars would just be the story of Anakin Skywalker saving the day. Likewise, if _A New Hope_ was the only Star Wars film ever made (which it was for 3 years) then Star Wars would just be the story of Luke Skywalker saving the day. Both are promised bright futures and everyone lives happily ever after.

The way the plot advances in the second film in each series leaves a need for a sequel to finish the story. At the end of each film, there are major developments which are left unreolved. Neither Episode 2 nor Episode 5 work unless another film is made in each trilogy.

As far as substance goes, each film is very similar plotwise. Young Skywalker is discovered to have incredible ablility with The Force and is faced with adversity and amputations. Similar themes, such as good vs. evil, are present in both films.

However, one theme present in the original trilogy NOT found in the current one is...

friendship.

When I watch the original trilogy (espcially Empire and Jedi) I am struck with how often the friendship of the main characters was stessed. Luke left Degobah because he knew his friends were in danger. The Emperor tried to weaken Luke, telling how his friends were going to fail. Luke was always trying to help his friends. Anakin, however, never even mentions his friends. He never even mentions any friends, for that matter. When Obi-Wan tries to relay a message from Anakin to Corscant, Anakin initially refuses to go to his aid, and Padme is the one who decided to help him out, saying 'Anakin, he's your mentor.' I don't think Anakin has any friends.

The people that shared Luke's life cared about him because of who he was. The people that shared Anakin's life cared about him because of what he was. Luke had the love of his friends, while Anakin had no friends. And that is why I think Luke had the strength to resist the dark side, while Anakin did
