After the destruction of the trade federation army in PM, why didn't Anakin Skywalker get the Naboo people to give him some cash to go and redeem Shmi Skywalker from Watto?

Geez... you would have thought the people of Naboo and the Queen would have been a tad grateful to their little savior.

I don't get it how Anakin waited 10 bloody years before going back to visit his 'beloved' mom who is trapped in slavery all this while.

I thought this was a little odd as well.

I guess in the old republic slavery was accepted. It's a bit strange tho... especailly with the Jedi spouting the values of good and evil.

The Republic officially has antislavery laws but I don't think it's as repugnant to them as it is to us.

The whole Jedi Order is one lighthop short of a slavery ring. They grab infants who never asked to be a Jedi from their parents, isolate them and indoctrinate them until they know about nothing except being a Jedi. Sure, they can choose to leave the Order after they reach a certain age of consent, but their whole system of training is based around the requirement that it begins and has lasting effects YEARS before the candidate can reasonably be said to be of consenting age.

Same goes for the Clone army, by the way. At least the Jedi do have strong misgivings about using them but mostly because of the escalation of war it represents, not about the ethical issues of breeding and raising an army of human conscripts. (In the novel, Obi-Wan does spend a minute reflecting on this.)

And finally, there's the issue of droids. Obviously, we can go back and forth forever on whether droids are sentient but they certainly act that way towards them a lot of the time and yet, nobody thinks twice about the fact that that droids are slaves in every sense of the word.

I know Tatooine is controlled by the Hutts, but I thought it was technically part of the Republic. Just that it was an in-name only arrangement.
