Star Wars was originally supposed to come out in December 1976 and was pushed back to May 1977.

If it had been released over Christmas, I wonder if this means studios today would be lining up to release its blockbusters in December instead of the summer season.

I doubt it, but if you think about it, blockbusters *are* released in December (as well as summer). There was one recently called 'Titanic' if I recall.

Big movies are always (usually) slated to come out around Memorial Day weekend, the 4th of July weekend, and Thanksgiving/Christmas.

And I really don't think Star Wars had anything to do with it. It's widely held that 'Jaws' was the first of what is now commonly called a 'Blockbuster' movie.

'Blockbuster' is only a title that has recently (within the past 20 years) been tossed around. Truthfully, there were 'blockbusters' as far back as the 1930's. 'Gone with the Wind' would probably still hold the top title, if a person adjusted for the rate of inflation.

I also seem to recall it was SUPPOSED to come out in blockbuster-June, but was saddled with its legendary production delays, which gave Fox just enough time to rework the marketing now that the 'Dante's Peak' 90's-disaster craze had finally crashed and burned for good (it's a *romance*, now!)

Jaws was Richard Zanuck's sudden realization that, waittaminute...it's about swimming...and it's summer

The term 'blockbuster' I believe was originally some kind of bomb they used in the war.
