I read Sony made the 'Superbit' DVD, a disk without fancy menu's and easter eggs. The entire capacity is used for and devoted to the movie itself. So you'd have better sound and vision, and a higher bitrate.

Sony, Philips and Pioneer are currently working on the Blue-ray disk. Normal DVD players use a red laser beam, but this one... yes, correct, a blue one! The difference is that this new disk can carry about 27GB, that's almost 6 times more than the current ones. (Blue light has a lower wavelength than red, so I think you can make smaller holes in the disk.)

But anw, if there were two version of a SW DVD, the normal one, the superbit and the blue ray (probably more expensive and available in less than 2 years) which would you buy? The normal one, the superbit or would you wait for the Blue Ray?

Personally I think I buy them all.

GL wouldn't work with Sony to release it on superbit so its a moot point. Plus the fact that Fox has movie rights and Sony owns its own movie production company I don't think it'd be legal.

Remember the blue laser version would require a DVD with a blue laser to read it. And last I read, the blue laser wasn't adopted into the HD-DVD standards. But I'm really just waiting with baited breath for the 4 disc set of Fellowship of The Ring on Nov 22nd IIRC. Originally I'd intended to wait to buy the boxed set, but doesn't look like that will happen.

Sony movie productions is a very different thing than Sony hardware. So you mean GL won't even buy a Sony DVD player?

If I Recall Correctly. Or IRC with EXTRA internet.

AFAIK = As Far As I Know IKYABWAI = I Know You Are But What Am I IANAL = I Am Not A Lawyer YHBT = You Have Been Trolled YHL = You Have Lost HAND = Have A Nice Day

The last three will typically be seen before the mid 90's and in the form of 'YHBT. YHL. HAND.'

Superbit is just a marketing gimmick. Any disc that maximizes video and audio bitrate could be called 'superbit'. Of course it's good, but just having a high bitrate doesn't mean the picture quality is optimal. MPEG encoding requires careful hand encoding to get it looking its best.

However, it appears that the Blue-Ray discs will NOT be the future high definition DVDs (HD-DVD) but rather used in future recordable DVD. Apparently they are choosing current DVD storage technology with MPEG-4 (instead of MPEG-2) for pre-recorded HD-DVD.

Superbit is a Sony/Columbia/Tristar-only marketing gimmick. Even without the name 'Superbit' a transfer can do the same thing by moving extra features to another disc and maximizing video/audio bitrates.

Blue-Ray is only going to be used to record HDTV broadcasts on disc like a VCR.

If the choice were between a normal DVD and a HD-DVD, I'd of course choose the high definition version, but you need an HDTV or computer to enjoy it.
