I was thinking the other night about the whole Star Wars on DVD issue, and the fact that Lucas obviously has various agendas holding him back, and how I'm willing to wait almost indefinitely *if* the disks also include the original versions (which seems unlikely).

And then it occured to me: he should release the original (not spec ed.) versions now (or soonish). With or without special features, not that fussed (although with would be nice). Then he can release his super-duper-new-scenes-added bells and whistles ultimate special edition final versions of all six after episode III, as is now planned. Preferably he should make it clear at the start that this is the release pattern he has in mind.

This way, everyone's happy:

- Fans get a version of the the films now; - Lucas still gets to make the 'definitve' version of the films once the trilgoies complete, and fix all his 'mistakes'; - Yet fans and film historians will have access to the original versions; - Those who don't like the changes in the new version - Greedo shooting first etc - don't have to watch them; - He can go back and revisit the dodgy CGI in the Special Editions; - Lucas also gets to sell the whole thing to everybody twice and wring every last dollar out of it (not that this is standard practice for him or anything); - Yet those fans who can't resist and buy both releases have a good three years for their bank balances to recover; and - The demand for bootleg DVDs of the trilogy is dramatically reduced, because at least there is a version available.

Surely this works for fans and for Lucas?

Lucas doesn't give a rat's tit about the fans. It'll happen the way he says it will happen, and unfortunately no amount of bitching will solve that.

He wants to forget the original editions existed, and he'll go out of his way to see they're never released again.

<snip>

Thing is, if DVD was around and popular in 1995 (the last time the original editions were released on VHS) what you are proposing would probably already have happened. Timing was off by a few years.

As it is, we can only hope GL changes his mind (he's stated that he _will not_ re-release the original editions, ever).

No, I didn't ignore my chance, I just didn't bother. My apologies if I offended you, I just enjoy a cheap laugh at the expense of those willing to lick George Lucas' sweaty nutsack.

So... If you like a film by a certain director, and are willing to purchase the film on DVD, you are willing to lick the said director's nutsack? Hardly. I bet your favourite films are 'Titanic' and 'Priscilla: Queen of the Desert'.

For the twats on this newsgroup, Lucas is in a no-win situation. He's either a greedy pig for not releasing the films on DVD or a greedy pig if he releases them as you say.

How does an artist bastardise his own work? That makes no sense.
