OK, this is probably a stupid question, but what exactly is a Sith? Is it just some sort of anti-Jedi? I never noticed any explaination of that. Also, there are only two at any one time or is that they are always in pairs?

Thanks,

The story goes that the Sith were an offshoot of the Jedi who disagreed philosophically with the Jedi. They wanted to use the Force to gain power, not uphold justice.

According to the 'A Guide to the Star Wars Universe' book ...

'Sith An ancient people, they were conquered by powerful dark-side magic. Over their 100,000-year history they came close to vanquishing the Jedi several times. Some 4,000 years before the Galactic Civil War, they battled the Jedi in a conflict that was known as the Sith War. They maintained an unbroken line of chief practitioners known as Dark Lords of the Sith. Since an internal conflict 2,000 years before the Battle of Yavin, the Sith were reduced to just two members - a master and an apprentice.
