Who was Sifo-Dyas?

The official Stars Wars character book and web site is silent on this character.

The unofficial fan site thinks Sifo-Dyas thinks he is one and the same as Sideous/Palpatine. However, it's not clear to me this can be the case since Sifo-Dyas was apparently a known quantity to the Jedi council and his death was known to have occured 10 years earlier.

Since Palpatine operates in the open, if he had tried to double as a live known quantity to the Jedi council, one would think the Jedis would have recognised him.

So this still leaves the question: who was Sifo-Dyas?

It didnt have to really be Sifo-Dyas, Sidious could have forged a transmission to the cloners, and then had Sifo killed somehow.

If that is the case, I wonder if we will get any fuller explination in episode III.

It still seems like a bit of a rip off that the official Star Wars AOTC character book has a ~ $25.00 price tag on it and says zilch about Sifo-Dyas. I didn't buy it for that very reason.

I agree. Neither will I. I picked up a copy at the book store and tried looking up Sifo-Dyas. He wasn't there so I set the book back down and left.

It's like, geez louiz, the book has got everything else under the Star Wars sun for early character history, but nothing on Sifo-Dyas. *****************

I believe Sifo-Dyas was seduced to the Dark Side, ordered the Clones, faked his death, killed a Nabooian policitian named Palpatine and had himself made to look like him, got elected as a Naboo Senator, then you know the rest. Mind you, in my theroy, this was all done PRIOR to Phantom Menace, so the only Palpatine we ever saw on screen was Sifo-Dyas/Darth Sidious.

How about Sifo-Dyas being Qui Gon. AS far as we are aware hes is the only jedi that we know f who died 10 yrs ago but He may have secretly been plotting with Count Dooku. Thoughts anyone.

Possible but I don't know how probable it is. Qui-Gon Jinn was definitely a rebel but he always acted in the best interests of the Republic. It's possible that he believed he was acting in those interests. Still, I've got the feeling that Palpatine is behind it somewhere...

Sifo-Dyas was a real Jedi known to Yoda and Mace Windu. Someone (most likely Dooku) used his name to buy the clone army. It's really just as simple as that, IMO.

That makes better sense. Especially since we did not have any other name for Darth Maul. Still, the Jedi Council knew who this person was. And Qui-Gon Jinn didn't know who Darth Maul was when he fought him the first time on Tattooine.
