This part probably could have been handled better. It just comes across as too much of a coincidence that she'd die moments after being rescued. Maybe Anakin could have followed his senses to a huge stew filled kettle, slowly peer into it, then have Shmi's head emerge in that weird slow motion used when Luke's face appeared in Vader's mask in ESB.

PG rating probably would have been sacrificed, but a better plot device it would be.
