could someone please direct me to a FAQ on the sith as i cannot seem to find any real explanation of their background, particularly the meaning of this quote.
I always thought the sith were simply dark Jedi's.

Actually there's a ton of information about the Sith in the book 'Star Wars: The Essential Chronology' by Kevin J. Anderson & Daniel Wallace. It's quite convulted & lengthy but the Sith were actually a people who were dominated by Dark Jedi who were fleeing from Light Side Jedi. The considered the Dark Jedi lords, hence the title Sith Lord(s).
The revenge of which Darth Maul speaks most likely refers to multiple wars with the light side Jedi which eventually led to the destruction of all Dark Jedi/Sith, save for one, Darth Bane. I seem to recall there was also internal conflict amongst the Sith which lead to the decision for their to only be two at any one time, a master & an apprentice.

Yes, you are correct Paul, yet it must be noted that this is EU and that often conflicts with canon.

No. The whole Dark Jedi thing is a farce. It is a contradiction in terms. A Force user is either a Jedi or a Sith. The Sith are those who practice the Dark Side of the Force, Jedi would be those who practice the Light.
