I've lost the thread, but there was some debate earlier as to who actually created the death star...

From http://www.starwars.com/databank/location/deathstar/ index.html

'The brainchild of Grand Moff Tarkin, the Death Star was developed in secret. Rebel Alliance spies were nonetheless able to learn of the weapon's existence, and stole vital technical schematics from guarded Imperial vaults. These desperate spies transmitted this data to Rebel leader Princess Leia Organa, who stored the plans in R2-D2's memory systems. '

So, according to this Tarkin was behind the death star. Obviously, what we saw in Ep. 2 contradicts this.

And I'd like to know when the death star was first created as well!

Could it not be that with all the infighting and corruption, the plans become known as Grand Moff Tarkin's work by the rebels? The Emperor isn't going to reveal that Dooku 'stole' the plans...to him, what does it really matter?

I posted a message about a contradiction I found in Rogue Planet. In that book, Greg Bear suggests that Reith Seinar came up with the idea for the Death Star, which Tarkin then stole. Bear seems to contradict earlier-written EU books that suggest Bevel Lemelisk and Qwi Xux came up with the idea. But it sure wasn't Tarkin.

It was apparently designed prior to Ep. II, but who knows. Maybe it was deemed to expensive during the Clone War and shelved. Then Grand Moff Tarkin found the plans in some dusty old archive and reworked them.

Or maybe the plans we saw in Ep. II aren't for THE death star, but for a different, smaller model.

How exactly? If I design a new Space Ship and send the plans to Boeing and they build it, who designed it?

Why couldn't the Genosians be buidling it based on Tarkin's designs?

Which is why it didn't work. Just imagine those helmsmen: 'What the hell is a fatal exception error???? That can't be good.'

'let's shut the entire Deathstar down and try booting it up again, that might work..!'

Invisible Man respectfully thought...

There's an upgrade available at Microsoft Corp., so they can't destroy the Earth, if they want their spanky new Deathstar to work.

Also, the lightsabars are using the handheld version of Windows, so that needs an upgrade too.
