Padme's big mistake was choosing the Bad boy, instead of the 'nice Guy' Jar-jar.
Think about it, Jar-jar makes her laff, he's thoughtful, helpful, and has a 2 1/2 foot long tongue. He could have made her very, very happy.
He is also a representative and a general, much more her social equal, if she could just get past her Naboo prejudices.
