At the point in episode II when Palpatine and various jedi's are talking about the need for the clone army, one miscellaneous character says something about one senator needing to bring up giving complete 'emergency' control to Palpatine. Palpatine says something about 'that senator' would have to be strong willed and minded, or something to that effect. As he is saying this the camera focuses in on JarJar, who is taking Padme's spot in the senate. Did Palpatine use the force to 'mind trick' JarJar, or was he just playing on JarJars insecurities? Either way it worked well because it accomplished what he wanted!

What do you think?

Nah.

Using the mindtrick seems to require verbal communication with the victim - and frequently, the victim responds by parroting the words out loud like a hypnotized automaton.

That makes it hard to use when strong-minded witnesses are around, as they would notice this strange behavior and get suspicious. I'm pretty sure that's a deliberate limitation on the power - otherwise, it would be too powerful and become too convenient an escape hatch for writers to use every time they need to get a Jedi out of a jam.

So I don't think a mindtrick was used here. It'd be redundant on an oaf like Jar-Jar anyway.

I think Jar Jar is secretly in cahoots with the Dark Side. His 'bumbling oaf' routine is actually an insidious deception learned in Sith academy, a form of disguise much like Yoda's apparent physical weakness.

Jar Jar was so weak minded he didn't need to be Jedi mind tricked. He just needed to think it was his idea, and his chance to be important.

Jar-Jar is an idiot who simply got 'played.' If you remember, I think Obi-Wan tells Anikin how Palpatine plays to the 'passions and prejudices' of senators.

Since Jar-Jar is a fool who wants to be respected, they simply manipulated him into believing he would be considered 'couragous' by offering an ammendment to give emergency powers.

It was quite effective.

That's exactly what happened. Congratulations on staying awake during the movie and having the intelligence to see what everyone else did and what Lucas intended for us to notice...

Bullshit. They didn't use a 'mind trick' on him, other than those humans can play any time they like. The mind trick requires a pedantic verse that the victim takes literally - 'if only someone with blah blah blah' does NOT indicate the course of action to be followed. You want to rethink your life. These aren't the droids you're looking for. You will take me to Jabba now. Republic credits will do fine. Those are LITERALLY taken into the direct thought process by the victim. The dialogue with the Emperor in that room was simply playing verbal cards, nothing more...
