...but Lucas /20th Century-Fox would not allow him a private screening. Just how special and exclusive is this damn film to begin with, if they refused to honor a celebrity request from the King of Rock n Roll.
Spielberg gets private screenings prior to release, of all SW movies. Of course, he's GL's buddy.
But Star Wars (77) had already been out for nearly two months when Elvis made repeated requests for a home screening or midnight screening downtown. According to Elvis 'canon' biographers, he never got the private viewing. Then suddenly died a few day later.
Even if Elvis were still alive to this very day but never got the screening, All I'm saying, if George Lucas knew about this in August 77 and said, 'No way. No one gets a private screening...' then he is a rude anal-retentive

So what you are saying is that every celebrity has the right to harrass the maker of a movie, the author of a book or any other artist to offer them private screenings/readings/whatever?
No thanks. If Lucas wants to show his friends, fine. If any VIP could come by and demand a private screening, well, the words 'annoyed' or 'pissed off' or 'busy with useless things' come to my mind.

If Elvis really wanted a private screen all he would have to do is buy out a show at whatever theator he wanted. This is a non-issue, move on with life.
