In ESB he tells Luke that 'size matters not', yet it clearly matters to him in AOTC when he lets Dooku get away as it takes his full concentration to stop the pillar falling on Luke & Obi. A tad disappointing for one with his alleged skills. Surely he could have saved the others with little effort, while still tackling Dooku? or at least not show such obvious signs of strain.

....and why would anyone leave the village idiot in charge of the affairs of their planet, never mind other matters of galactic importance?

Possible reasons: It could be harder to control a moving object then a stationary object. Yoda could have been tired from the fight or less focused. It could actually be harder to control larger objects (which makes sense as otherwise jedis could move mountains with the force), and Yoda actually meant that the size of the X-wing didn't matter as it was still small enough to be controlled by the force

Real reason: Dooku had to escape as it was in the script

Also, the X-Wing wasn't going anywhere or about to kill anybody - there was urgency to catching the pillar.

So certain are you.

Well, George Bush and Bill Clinton got elected as President of the US.

And not in the same breath........

Heck, even Yasser Arafat got elected as President of the Palestineans. I can't figure that one out.
