She does have midichlorians. She's not as strong as Luke because she hasn't been trained properly. It's all in the EU :o)

For a start there were at least two female Jedi in Episode I: Yaddle and Adi Gallia.

There are plenty of female Jedi. In TPM there were three on the Council; Adi Gallia; Yaddle and Depa Billaba. There are many more in AOTC including Luminara Unduli; Barriss Offee; Shaak Ti; Bultar Swan; Aayla Secura and Stass Allie.
