A pretty good analysis except for the part where the author declares that the southern secession in the US was based on preservation of republican ideals and not slavery. As a historian I can safely say that is false. Most every root cause of the US civil war can be traced back to issues of pro & anti-slavery. Though many like to call them issues of 'states rights' or 'preservation of southern lifestyle' in both slavery was at the core. If it was not it would not have taken nearly another 100 years before the south would have to be forced to allow equal rights to African Americans. Still today in many areas there are southerners that refuse to acknowledge equal rights. I also have to say that as a historian, veteran, and patriot I find your comparing Lincoln to Palpatine insulting.
As for the EP II issue, Whatever Lucas is borrowing is still not reflective of the American civil war since in essence Palpatine is controlling both sides. The situation barely compares to the historical facts of the civil war.

The person who wrote the article has no idea what he's talking about, the Evil Republic blockading Naboo? wtf? has he even seen Episode 1?
Wrong, Lincoln et al could have cared less about the slaves, the US would have lost face and a large portion of its economy if the South was allowed to create its own country.
