I dont know, I quite surprised that they havent already released them. I hope that when they do come out, there is the option to watch the origional version or the special edition.

There's an article on theforce.net that quotes GL or someone who works for him that they're gone forever. Glad I have my LDs and VHS widescreens.

According to numorous interviews with George Lucas they will be released after Episode 3 is completed. He was also asked back in 1997 when the Special Edition came out if he would ever release the 'Missing Scenes' with Luke & Biggs on Tattooine, and Lucas said these will be on the DVDs sometime in the future.

Did you read the quote on theforce.net? It pretty much confirmed that GL will only release the special or special special editions on DVD.
