Uhhh. Star Wars (A new hope before it was called A New Hope) revolutionized the industry in special effects. Special Effects was ALWAYS a very important part of Star Wars.

Indeed - but even in Star Wars, the special effects were REAL - models, guys in suits. They had a tactile feel. CGI usually feels very, very fake, despite being nice to look at...

Lucas was careful not to overdo the special effects by focusing too much on them.
He said it himself in an interview. He said that the film should be focused on the characters and less on the gee-wizz effects.
But obviously he broke that rule in PM.
