Sookie is a great name in my opinion and reason enough to read a book, especially if it involves vampires.
This books is also of the lighter school of books, which is good in certain situations. The story in a nutshell is about a small town waitress, who happens to be a telepath as well, which in her view is a disability.
She falls in love with a vampire called Bill , who is the perfect boyfriend for her (I have to agree with Tiny Little Librarian, who says that Bill is no name for a vampire). Since he is a vampire she can’t read his thoughts at all, and this suits her just fine (imagine having sex with someone while they were fantasising about someone else and knowing exactly who and what there fantasy was about… not fun at all)
In the book, Vampires have recently come out of the closet, so to speak, and exposed themselves to the world.
All this came about because of the creation of synthetic blood, making it possible for them to exist without preying on humans. Of course being a minority there are those who hate them and those who adore them, the latter are called fang bangers. (Reminds me a bit of Fag hag) Anyway, shortly after Sookie and Bill get involved 3 fang banger girls are murdered, bringing on a whole lot of fear fueled hate and turmoil, putting Bill at risk, and of course Sookie is afraid that due to the fact she has a vampire boyfriend, she herself is in danger. So Sookie employs her disability to solve the mystery.
This in no way is great art and will never turn into classical literature, but as I have said in previous posts, a good story has its place, and good storytelling is an art in itself.
Charlaine Harris Tells a mean story. Worth reading, if you are in need of a fun and entertaining book.
