This is driving me nuts, I could have sworn that Christopher Lee was in the original Star Wars, yet I can't find who he played. It sticks out in my memory because I remember reading his name way back and thinking that he was the only 'star' of the original cast. Am I just imagining all of this or what?

Probably imagining it because Sir Alec Guniess and Peter Cushing were well established actors at the time.

You are probably thinking of Peter Cushing playing the part of Grand Moff Tarkin. Both Cushing and Lee did do a lot of horror films...Cushing normally killing vampires, and Lee playing the part of vampires kinda thing...

THey are both friends IIRC.

You are thinking of Peter Cushing who played Grand Moff Tarkin. You got them confused because they were both stars of the classic Hammer horror films of the 50's and 60's such as FRANKENSTEIN and DRACULA. It's nice to see Lucas pay homage to a classic series of films by having it's two legendary actors as prominent characters.

Easy to get confused. Peter Cushing was the Imperial General in ANH.

Christopher Lee and Cushing played together in many of the horror flicks in the past. So its easy to mix them up.
