Yes, it's covered briefly in the book. Over the years Palpatine and Anakin have met a couple of times with the Chancellor taking an interest in the Padawan's progress. Anakin saw him as another mentor, one whose compliments were genuine instead of given out of obligation. Whereas Obi-Wan often found fault with Anakin Palpatine always told him how powerful he was and how great he would become.
