I have the DVD's of both the SE and original - they are very good quality, but definitely not the quality of the TPM release. They are mastered off of the Laserdisc, and have Dolby Digital 5.1 sound, and laserdisc quality video (read: good resolution, a little flat in places, but a whale better than VHS).
They are worth having...

The THX re-releases are probably your best bet. Hopefully GL will include both SE and Original on the DVD's.

Do you really think so? My impression is that Lucas treats the originals like they no longer even exist...

maybe when eventually they release the original trilogy on DVD they will include both versions of each movie.

This is actually a big relief. Some of us detest the SEs. Still, it would also provide a HUGE surprise, so I'm prepared to be disappointed.
(I can just see the included 'original edition' including everything EXCEPT, say, Han firing first, because 'that's just wrong' or something.)

The THX laserdisc set with Vader, Yoda and a Stormtrooper on the respective covers was the 'last best' release of the originals. All releases since then - both in theaters and on home video - have been the SEs.
