Why, oh why, were such lame lines written for C-3PO in this movie? The horror of his one-liners brings the movie down a full half star (at least in my mind).

Because in Episode IV, Anthony Daniels put the life and personality into Threepio.

NOW, Lucas is trying to put the life into him through the script. Just doesn't work.

Treepio was originally written to be played as a gangster type character. Anthony Daniels played him as a British aristocrat. Lucas loved it, and kept it, but shouldn't try to WRITE the personality Daniels gave it.

Plus - Lucas has lost his innocence.

So did I. I thought 3PO brought a great sense of comic relief to the film and it was one of the moments in the film that really made it feel more like one of the original trilogy films.
