Chaps,
When it is mentioned that Anakin will bring 'balance to the force' perhaps what they really mean (and are scared of) is that after centuries of the light side of the force we will now have centuries of the dark side....therefore balancing each another? yin and yang and all that?
Perhaps Anakin will bring the dark side of the force into power therefore balancing out all these years of the light side?
Or as it is mentioned in ROTJ about Vader 'There is still good inside you', perhaps he is both light and dark?
Just a thought!

I think you hit the nail here, it seems to me that the balance in the Force has to be a balance between good and evil, light and dark, yin and yang. The jedi ruled for a thousand generations, that seems a severe imbalance between the light and the dark. Vader helped the Emperor hunt the Jedi thereby reducing their numbers to a 'balance'.

'Jman'
Yoda advises Luke what the Force is, during epV. It cannot be used for neither evil or good. It can be used as an allie though. Dark and Light are equal power.
During the Galactic Republic the Jedi were keepers of the peace and only used their 'knowledge' of the force (epII) to mediate in issues that required resolving. You might call these negotiations, even aggresive at points! Anakin clearly enjoys aggresive negotiations... oh, dear.

Another faucet to this is that, after this trilogy is finished there will be two Jedi (Obi-Wan & Yoda), and two Sith (Palpatine & Vader). Perhaps that is what they mean by bring balance to the force.

There is an artical on either Theforce.net or starwars.com with an interview with Lucas rgar I found last time this issue came up that debukes this theory. But I can't find it any more.
More or less the Palpetine is the cause of the force being out of balance and thorwing him into the pit solves the problem. Anakin does not fulfil the prophacy untill he destroys the Sith.

You have to let go of the idea that balance means good and evil have the same strength.
If bring balance to the force means what you think it means, the sage would end at ep 3.

'Balance' for the force doesn't mean balance in a traditional 'even' sense. Notice that dark force users are always called dark Jedi or Sith, while Good force users are rarely designated as 'good.' Dark use is the deviation, not one side of a coin.
Jedi - 'good' users - FEEL the force, LET it flow, etc. This is very passive. Dark side users abuse the force by bending it to their will. Yoda says the force is his ally; 'ally' implies an equal. Dark side users seek to subdue the force according to their will. This abuse, pulling the force to your will insted of lettin it flow through you and guide your actions, creates the imbalance.

Go ahead 'Dave Parrin-Bull', make my day...
The issue of balance has nothing to do with equality of numbers. There was never an equal number of Sith Lords and Jedi Knights, except maybe for a short time before Yoda's death. Even one Sith Lord is too many. The Sith care for nothing except absolute power. In order to get this they will destroy anyone, including entire civilizations. The Force needs life in order to exist and since the Sith are so destructive their very existence threatens the Force. Anakin, or Luke depending on your point of view, destroys the Sith forever and thus restoring balance.

While I think I mostly agree with you, Stuart, I would dispute - or at least clarify - 'the idea that balance means good and evil have the same strength.'
First of all, I would say (despite what the Jedi think) that the Dark Side of the Force is *not* synonymous with 'evil'. I would say that the Dark side is the power of anger, fear, and a host of other disruptive emotions and drives. These things are not in themselves evil; it's just that they lead to evil behavior when left untempered by reason and compassion.
The Sith are evil because they are consumed by the Dark Side. It's quicker and easier, so they think it's all they need. But the Jedi are consumed by the Light Side. They refuse to admit that darker emotions are a part of their natures, and seek to repress that side of themselves. A truly balanced Force user, which is what I think Luke ultimately becomes, is capable of using the Dark Side (e.g. a burst of furious strength when fighting to defend his beloved sister) without being consumed by it, and therefore without becoming evil.
Anakin brings balance to the Force by re-asserting the Dark Side, tilting the balance slightly back toward the Dark Side, then finally getting the balance exact by reforming himself and getting rid of the evil Emperor.

Then by your logic at then end of ROTJ the force is out of balance again. and basicly nothing has been acomplished.

Exactly, the dark side is the imblance. Destroying the Sith is the cure. Anakin killed the Sith master, and turned away from the dark side, thus killing Darth Vader (from a certain point of view). No more Sith no more imbalance.
Ifoudn this on theforce.net http://perso.club-internet.fr/willow/E1_009_001.html
It kinda backs up what I am trying to say.
