In ATOC - Padme reveals that she was elected to two terms as Queen. huh? I've never heard of a Queen that was elected - usually it's by birthright.

If that's true - isn't it highly unlikely that someone so young as Padme was in TPM would be elected Queen? I mean comeone - you would think that an advanced society like the Naboo would elect someone older... That's like saying the U.S. would elect a 16 yr. old girl as President....

Anyone have an explanation?

Well, she said the same in TPM... 'I was not elected to watch my people suffer and die...' so that's hardly news.

Why would she be so young? Who knows... probably so she would be in a position to meet Anakin yet young enough to marry him at some point in

It should also be noted that when she oes back to Naboo in AOTC and talks to the new queen, the new queen is also very young. So maybe it's just a culture thing.

It's a BAD movie, and a BAD bit of plot. Why is your defense of clearly bad writing to argue that movies require being addleminded?

Go ahead 'Venger', make my day...

Or Lucas can write but chooses to write a 14 year elected Queen because it's different and gives a unique feel to his galaxy far, far away. Nobody complained that a Wookiee and a droid played a game of holographic chess. That's even weirder than a 14 year old elected Queen.

It makes it feel stupid. Maybe he should call the color blue 'green', and scramble the order of the base 10 number system too, to give it a unique feel. Or simply show the movie upside down... it doesn't make it feel far, far away, just far, far fetched...

THAT looked futuristic - an alien and a robot playing some variant of a strategy game. That frankly simply requires - 1) aliens, which are kinda necessary in any sci-fi movie, can we agree? 2) An intelligent droid - seeing as Deep Blue buried Kasparov, this is not a stretch, and 3) holographic chess, which I can play right now, save for the convenience of a handy holograph generator. What's so far fetched about that scene?

I don't see how - you'll be able to play holographic chess against an AI opponent in your lifetime. But you WON'T see a 14 year old queen elected head of the planet...

If she could do the job I would. I don't actually know any 14 year old girls but I find it hard to imagine they could do any worse than the politicians we have running this country.

Which country is that? You cannot POSSIBLY be serious. I'm fairly cynical, but to say that 14 year old girls would be better off running the country is over the edge...

Was the Queen's age ever mentioned in TPM? The fact that the actress was 14 (or whatever age) certainly doesn't require the character she is playing to be the same age. How long is a year on her planet? Or maybe Naboo-ians all look young for their age. All that fresh air and nice scenery helps keep the wrinkles away, don't you know.

In the movie? No. In the book? Yes. Natalie Portman was older than 14.
