Vampires it seems, come and go into mode every decade or so.
In Each wave of vampire fashion the myth behind them is a little different, and except for Dracula, who was of course pure evil, as terrifying as can be and very far from human, all the other vampires that I have read about in the last 20 years or so are all depicted as neither evil nor good - (Depends on your point of view) or like people - there can be both evil and good vampires.
In the Anne Rice novels for example - In an Interview with a Vampire, Louise, the Main Character comes across as a nice guy (except for the killing part) dealing with a crappy situation, and Lestat, His Maker, comes across in a whole lot less positive light.
In the book Lestat - Lestat is the good guy and Louise is colored in more evil tones.
Moon light and Blood Ties, the 2 TV Vamp series Both vampires are depicted as sexy as hell, in Blood Ties Henry is Sexy but possibly Bad or a little bit dangerous. In Moon Light Mick Saint John is every girls dream boy, except for the fact that he is a vampire….
So Sexy or Not?
Tia from Fantasy Debut has 10 explicit reasons why not.
All of the above vampires (except for Dracula) are painted in a sexy light and the question is why…
It has just occurred to me that all of the writers of the above are women (except for Bram Stroker) I suppose that could be one explanation to the quite strange phenomenon of making something so evil and vile into something completely sexy…(even I am a sucker for Mick Saint John)
It is only comparable to the women who fall in love with serial killers behind bars - finding them misunderstood and good at heart…
What do you think? Any truth to my thoughts here?
