I have a question. Does becoming a Jedi really mean you have to abandon and forget about your mother who's stuck on some God forsaken desert planet to suffer and eventually die?

Code or not, family is there long before this kid's potential as a Jedi is found (at least the way they seem to be going at it.) Quite frankly, I'd liken it to being a Catholic priest when it comes to attachments. I don't think it includes one's born-into family.

Qui-gon would have scaped the plan if Shmi put her foot down and said 'No way in heck' like any good mother should have. Remeber Watoo's pod racer was broken, the one they used Annie was building in screte, Qui-gon claimed he won it in a game of chance and needed a driver.

I also recall Shmi saying something about Wattoo having the final word on the racing during dinner. Truthfully, she was caught between a rock and a hard place. Anakin, when he was younger, had her wanting-to-help heart also.
